چکیده:

 در این مقاله می پردازیم به برخی تلاش ها برای توسعه و به کارگیری شاخص ها از نقطه نظر کمی و کیفی. نتایج تجزیه و تحلیل های آماری لیست "جلد مجله ی شاخص های زیست محیطی" مورد بحث و بررسی قرار گرفته اند. تمرکز این تحقیق بر پنج پرسش متمرکز شده است:

(A) چه نوع شاخصه های زیست محیطی به کار گرفته شده اند و به چه میزان مورد استفاده قرار گرفته اند؟

(B) در چه بافت مدیریتی این شاخصه ها به کار گرفته شده اند؟

(C) از چه ابزارهای یکپارچه ای برای ارائه ی نتایج به شکل تجمیعی استفاده شده است؟

(D) آیا یک تئوری برای به کارگیری و تفسیر شاخصه های زیست محیطی طراحی و پیشنهاد شده است؟

(E) چه چالش هایی بر سر راه توسعه و به کارگیری شاخص های زیست محیطی وجود دارد؟

پاسخ سه پرسش اول در جدول ها و شکل ها به تصویر کشیده شده است، در حالی که پاسخ پرسش چهارم بسیار کوتاه داده شده است و در عوض اشاره شده به مقالاتی که ملاحظات تئوریک مربوط به  به کارگیری شاخص های زیست محیطی را در خود جای داده اند. با بررسی چالش های اصلی پیش رو ملاحظه شد که سؤال های مطرح شده نیاز به توجه بیشتری در سال های آتی دارند(منظور دو سؤال آخر است) : اول اینکه از پرسش های کلی تر برای شاخص ها استفاده شود و دوم اینکه شاخص های متنوع تفسیر شوند و البته بر پایه ی اصل بقاء که پوشش کاملی بر روی زمینه های زیست محیطی – اجتماعی – اقتصادی و سیاسی دارد و فعالیت های مرتبط با آن ها را در بر می گیرد. به علاوه، نیاز مبرم به تجمیع و یکپارچه سازی و ارزیابی متعادل در سیستم های شاخص ها لیست شده است و این لیست یک وظیفه ی اساسی برای کارهای آتی در این زمینه است.
