This DVD is for anyone who knows the rules of chess but would like to be able to improve their game with some specific tactics and strategies. It builds on the basic principles of chess that should have already been learnt. However, there is also an introductory chapter for those that may have gaps in this part of their foundation. The main part of the DVD is split into four chapters: Opening – The general principles of the opening are discussed here. No specific opening repertoire is suggested but a guide of how to tackle any opening and come through the first stage of the game in a better position. Middlegame – Some basic tactical devices are introduced such as the pin, fork, skewer and discovered attack. These devices are used throughout the levels of chess and even top grandmaster games are won from a basic device as these. Ending – The basic checkmating technique of the most common endings that occur in novice games are instructed here. These techniques are essential to master before continuing with more complex checkmates. Test – The DVD finishes with a test chapter which consists of 20 exercises based on the information discussed throughout the DVD. Each exercise allows time for you to pause and calculate the answer before the answer is discussed. This DVD is a must for anyone who wants to improve their game, whether they are a junior or an adult. It can be for those who have just learnt the moves or for those who have played for some time but want to consolidate their knowledge. Video running time: 4 hours 15 min.

The Fantasy Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3) is a tricky try by White to steer the game into muddy waters right from the off and take Black away from the solid positions he is accustomed to in the main line variations of the Caro-Kann. Traditionally the opening never gained too much credibility amongst top players, since White's attempt to preserve his pawn centre at the cost of weakening his kingside was hardly seen as a major threat to the super-reliable Caro. However, thanks to a wave of news ideas and innovations first introduced at the 2010 European Individual Championships and many more thereafter, the variation has made a major comeback and can now be found in the repertoires of some of the world's best. In this 60 minute video, IM Lawrence Trent will discuss the 5 main variations Black has at his disposal but how with each one White has a number of ways to keep the position full of play and dynamic possibilities, leading to games which loyal Caro players will have difficulty dealing with.

GM Boris Altermans presents a 4 video series investigating perhaps one of the soundest of the romantic gambits from the 18th century that is still used at top level in the game today - The Evans Gambit with 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Bc5 4 b4!?

Captain William Davies Evans was the captain of a sailing packet carrying mail between Milford Haven and Waterford in Great Briton in the 1820s. During one of these crossings the gallant captain suddenly discovered a promising new fourth move for White And so, the Evans Gambit was born coming at the height of the romantic period in the game, the swashbuckling gambit soon took the imagination of the chess world and was adopted by the likes of McDonnell, Labourdonnais, Anderssen, Moprhy, Chigorin and Steinitz.

However, despite never being refuted, the gambit went out of fashion at the turn of the 20th Century only to come back in dramatic style in 1995, when Garry Kasparov rehabilitated this venerable old gambit.

Have you ever considered The DERLD? This was the acronym title given to the Delayed Exchange of the Ruy Lopez Differed with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Bxc6 by English authors Tony Swift & Len Pickett. While both authors were only top club players for Lewisham, in the early 1970s they collaborated on a series of critically-acclaimed opening research pamphlets (and many magazine articles). Their most famous was the DERLD, and their published analysis on it was even used by an untitled English player to crush one of the world's top theoreticians at the time, GM Ludek Pachman, in just 25 moves during a 1972 London tournament! However its modern-day treatment is considered more positional in nature, has a different character to it than that of the Exchange variation of the Ruy Lopez, and has been played by top GMs such as Mickey Adams and Gata Kamsky.

And in his latest Gambit Guide series, GM Boris Alterman takes a closer look at one of the main themes of the Grand Prix Attack, with the pawn sacrifice for White of f4-f5 followed by the launching of an all-out kingside attack.
