                               Introduction

In my thesis I would like to present the main theories and perspectives on postcolonialism in literature. There were already a lot of theories written on this subject. Therefore, I do not want to only present these theories but also find their main ideas in practice. It means applying them on literary works that are said to be part of the postcolonial literature.

For this practical part I have chosen two authors – Salman Rushdie and Zadie Smith. I have deliberately chosen these two because they differ in many aspects. To begin with, their country of origin is different. Rushdie comes from India (Pakistan) where he was born and then moved to Britain. Zadie Smith was already born in Britain and “only” one of her parents is Jamaican. Even though Rushdie was born in India, it was only in 1947 – the same year India gained its independence; we cannot say that he had a first-hand experience of colonialism. Concerning this aspect we can assign both of them to the second generation of postcolonial authors – those who have not lived in the former colonies for part (or most) of their lives.

However, there is an age difference of twenty six years between them. It means that they have lived through different political, cultural and social events in Britain; thus the question is if the issues and topics they dwell on differ as well. Also their rendering or approach to the problems varies.

When talking about Zadie Smith’s White Teeth, it was said that she has written not only a postcolonial novel with an influence of Rushdie but also a typical English novel dealing with social classes and politics of the 1980s in Britain. On the other hand, Rushdie’s novels are very hard to define; he employes various styles and forms usually within one novel. His literature was ranked among postcolonialism and a postmodern form of magic realism. He is also very politically committed and writes non-fiction, such as various essays, studies and newspaper articles.

We can say, that these two authors differ in various aspects even though their intent is the same – to put light on the postcolonial situation in the centre of former Empire and its former colonies and show the vices of contemporary multicultural society.

I would also like to find out if the theories of postcolonialism in literature are valid in the cases of both these authors and if they do, then, possibly, if there are any divergences or if they can be both put into the same field called “postcolonialism”.

However, there are many different opinions as far as postcolonialism is concerned. I would like to mention some of them and also those that can be said to be even opposite to see that this is not an easy concept in the literary studies.

First, I would like to briefly introduce both authors, however, I do not want to go into details. My intention is to point out the most important and interesting aspects of their lives and production that are relevant to my thesis. Then I will introduce the theory of postcolonialism and postcolonial studies. We can say that there are as many various points of view as there are the literary critics who gave their opinion on that subject. I want to present the most influential and probably also somehow controversial ones as well as introducing the circumstances and time period when postcolonialism came into existence. Since every literary theory is always a reaction to something that already exists and at the same time usually “cooperates” with other literary theories, I would like to present some of these theories that are essential in understanding postcolonialism.

In the next part I will ask and answer the question whether Zadie Smith and Salman Rushdie are postcolonial authors and if they are, why then; what are the issues that unite them under the heading “postcolonialism” and what exactly makes them be ranked among the postcolonial authors. Then, I will outline the main issues and elements of postcolonial theory that can be (and are) to be found in the postcolonial writing, and mainly those that can be found in the novels by Salman Rushdie and Zadie Smith.

The last part of my thesis contains the actual analysis of the literary works by these two authors with the use of the elements of postcolonialism. The aim of this part is to find similarities and differences in dealing with similar issues on similar background in their novels. For this practical part I have chosen one work by each author, i.e. White Teeth by Zadie Smith and The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. I have decided for these two particular novels for the reason that White Teeth are compared to The Satanic Verses on various grounds. Several reviewers claimed that Zadie Smith was highly influenced by Rushdie when writing this novel therefore I would like to find the instances of his influence (if there are any).
